"The role of the Ombudsman in the defence of the fundamental rights of Angolan citizens living in Belgium," was the theme of the lecture given by the Ombudsman, Florbela Rocha Araújo, on Wednesday in the Kingdom of Belgium.
The Ombudsman's intense working day began with a visit to the Federal Institute for Human Rights of the Kingdom of Belgium, where she was received by the Director, Martien Schotsmans, with whom she shared experiences and knowledge acquired in the field of human rights.
During the visit, the importance of the National Human Rights Institutions and their role in promoting gender equality and defending vulnerable groups was highlighted.
In the capital of the European Union, Florbela Araújo also visited the Belgian House of Representatives, where she had a meeting with the President of the House, Eliane Tillieux, and discussed the experience she had learnt from the work of the Sectoral Ombudsmen in the Kingdom of Belgium.
The highlight of the Ombudsman's working visit was a meeting with the Angolan community living in the Kingdom of Belgium.
Florbela Araújo had an open dialogue with Angolans, who expressed their concerns and wishes.
Representatives of various Angolan associations were present, including the Association of Angolan Women in Belgium, the Agostinho Neto Foundation, Angola Eventos, the Association of Autistic Students and Palancas Negras.
The event also honoured the Ambassador of the Republic of Angola accredited to the Kingdom of Belgium, Mário Constantino, for being the first diplomat to address an invitation to the Ombudsman institution to publicise its role in the diaspora, and the Ombudsman for bringing her compatriots together to reflect on issues within her sphere of action.
The Ombudsman thus concluded her working visit to the Kingdom of Belgium, at the invitation of the Angolan Ambassador to that country, Mário Constantino.
